Post by: ipacific on January 26, 2009, 07:28:14 AM
Mount Matafao
At 653 meters (2,142 ft.) this is Tutuila Island’s highest peak, and can be traversed in half  a day.  The trailhead begins directly opposite of the Mt. Alava trail.  To access the main  trail, climb the white metal ladder up to the ridge south of the road.  The hike is about  three hours long, through a tranquil rainforest.  Caution is advised, and it is safest to stay  on the ridge for the entirety of the hike.  Avoid hiking in rainy weather, as the trails can  become slippery and dangerous.
