Senator Liufau; a great American Samoan

Flags flew at half staff in honor of the passing of Senator Liufau Tanielu Sonoma Unutoa, the late senator who passed away on August 3rd at Straub Hospital in Honolulu at the age of 60.

Governor Togiola paid tribute to Senator Liufau calling him a “great American Samoan.”
"On behalf of the people and government of American Samoa, I wish to express my sincere and heartfelt condolences on the passing of a great American Samoan, Senator High Talking Chief Liufau Tanielu Sonoma Unutoa.
Senator Liufau was not only a statesman, where he proudly served his beloved district of Maoputasi in the 30th and 31st legislatures, but he was also a great friend and a beloved father of the Territory.

Senator Liufau’s background was in meteorology, having spent most of his professional career at the Weather Bureau in Tafuna for 30 years. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Development Bank of American Samoa, where he worked tirelessly to make improvements for the people of American Samoa.

We thank God for Senator Liufau’s life as head of his family and his village of Aua, and for his service as a Deacon in the CCCAS Church. I have always greatly admired Senator Liufau for his invaluable contribution. He will always be remembered. I will never forget his charm, wit, endearing sense of humor and ‘the singer with the golden voice.’

Mary joins me in expressing our deepest sympathies to Mrs. Sive Liufau, children and the entire family during this difficult time.

In honor of this tremendous man, all flags are lowered at half mast at sunrise on the day before interment until sunset on the day of interment, in remembrance of Senator Liufau's dedication to an eternally grateful Territory.

I am also proud to authorize the use of the Territorial Flag in the funeral services for Senator Liufau Tanielu Sonoma Unutoa whose service to the Territory is deserving of this honor.”
