Fagatogo inter-island wharf terminal construction

 Wednesday, March 24, 2010
The construction of the inter-island ferry passenger terminal at the Fagatogo wharf began with a groundbreaking ceremony for the project that will service the Lady Naomi and MV Sili.
The new inter-island wharf terminal, an open structure from the Territorial Registrar’s Office to the dock area, has been in the plans for more than ten years, and now it will be constructed with the much-needed funds provided by the Federal Transit Administration through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

“I am very happy to begin the construction of this very exciting project because the inter-island ferry passenger terminal is very important for our travelers to Manu’a and to Samoa,” said Governor Togiola. “For many years we have planned to build an appropriate facility that will provide shelter for passengers and their cargo from the sun and rain, and now we are proud to begin this project that will greatly assist our ferry service, and if the weather is in our favor we should be dedicating this new terminal by September of this year.”

The new inter-island ferry passenger shelter, at 4,800 square feet, will have 14 inch galvanized posts on 24 inch concrete pedestals supporting glue laminated beams, curved roof and roofing which will extend to the dock area. Vehicles will be able to drive underneath and through the dock access road towards the rear of the Fono.

The contract has been awarded to Paramount Builders for $373,377. It is estimated that it will take five months to build the passenger shelter.

Governor Togiola expressed his gratitude to the Federal Transit Administration and the ARRA funding, and also to Public Works Director Taeaotui Punaofo Tilei, Port Administration Director Matagi Ray Mailo McMoore and their departments, Paramount Builders and Fagatogo village for all being part of this project.

“We thank our federal and local partners for their tremendous support, and we especially thank all of our passengers who utilize the Fagatogo inter-island wharf for their patience throughout the years due to the lack of a facility,” said Governor Togiola. “The new passenger terminal will provide safe and convenient shelter for all of our passengers as well as enhance the appearance of that part of the Fagatogo area.”
